New To Vaping?

We think a “CONGRATULATIONS” is in order! If you have made it this far, you either have already become a ‘Vaper’ or are considering switching to vaping from smoking cigarettes. Well done, you have made the first steps in a life changing journey. This page is to serve as a brief guide to switching and explains what it’s all about.

Here is a glossary of terms commonly used by vapers and throughout this site, click any of the highlighted words below to find out their meaning.

Is it safe?

The PHE (Public Health England), in a recent report stated that vaping is “around 95% less harmful to health than smoking…” [read the report here]. Given the relatively new technology of vaping, it is hard to be more precise as there is a lack of long-term studies. At 95% less harmful than smoking, it’s time to put down the smokes and make the switch.

We do not advise anyone who is not already a smoker to take up vaping.

The Basics

The vaping industry has come on leaps and bounds in the short time it has been around, so it may seem daunting when you first look into it. So here's the three things you will need to get blowing clouds:

battery
A Battery – Nope, not the ones out of the TV remote… You will need a vaping specific battery. Many are supplied with a charger or contain their own built-in charging port.
Tank
A Tank - This is the section that holds your eliquid, it also contains the heating coil that vapourises the eliquid, often called an atomiser or coil.
Bottle
Some Eliquid – This is the part where we come in! Eliquids come in many nicotine strengths, flavours and sizes. All of our eliquid uses only the best ingredients, and is manufactured in a clean room laboratory.

Devices

There are literally thousands of combinations of devices you can have, but for our purposes we will focus on two tried and tested devices to get you up and running. If in the future you would like to move up to a more advanced device, then take a look at YouTube, forums and Google for news on the latest products.

New to Vaping

eGo-T The eGo-T CE4– This device provides you with everything you need out of the box (except eliquid!) to begin your venture into the vaping world. These devices have been around for quite awhile now, as such you can pick one up for relatively little.

Pros
  • Great beginners device
  • Low cost
  • Similar vapour production compared to regular cigarette smoke
  • Lightweight & small
Cons
  • Lower vapour production than larger devices
  • Limited battery capacity
  • No upgrade options
  • Limited to tank eliquids (upto 50% VG Max)

Summary
This device will serve you well, everyone at Herbal Tides started on this very device, it served as a perfect stepping stone to break the dependence on cigarettes. Given it’s small size it fits in your pocket without being cumbersome. You may want to purchase 2-3 batteries so you can rotate them

A little more advanced

Subox Mini The Kanger Subox Mini Kit – Once you’ve made the switch, this is a great device to use, as if offers more power and more dynamics to your vaping experience. This device will also allow you to use high VG (Cloud Chaser) eliquids, give you more vapour production and less ‘throat hit’.

Pros
  • Upgradeable
  • Higher power and High capacity battery
  • Better flavour & vapour production
  • Front mounted USB charge port
  • Suitable for both Tank and Cloud Chaser liquids
  • Can recharge whilst vaping
Cons
  • Price is higher, however device will last longer
  • Heavier, yet still portable

Summary
This device is truly awesome when you step up from an eGo, it introduces you to all the facets of vaping, including: Sub-Ohming, Variable Power and RBA (Re-Buildable Atomiser). All this may seem daunting, but this kit comes with a full instruction booklet. I am actually using this very device whilst writing this guide!
Note: you will need to purchase an 18650 battery, we recommend purchasing a Samsung 25r 18650. Non-high drain batteries are not suitable for this device.

Eliquid

So now you have your device, you’ll need some great tasting eliquid. Eliquid is comprised of 4 main ingredients: Propylene Glycol (PG), Vegetable Glycerin (VG), Flavouring & Nicotine (we also supply Nicotine free (0mg) eliquid).

So let’s take a look at each of these ingredients:

Propylene Glycol – This is mainly your flavour carrier, it soaks up the flavours and combines with the molecules, taking them through into the vapour produced. Propylene Glycol has a stronger throat hit than Vegetable Glycerin, which helps mimic the effect on the throat of smoking a cigarette.

Vegetable Glycerin – This is the component that creates the vapour, and lots of it! The higher the VG content, the more cloudy your vapour production will be. VG is also naturally sweet, so brings a sweetness to the eliquid. VG is also much smoother on the throat, compared to PG.

Flavouring – Our liquids are made up of unique blends of food grade flavourings. All of our flavourings are high grade US made and diacetyl free.

Nicotine – We use Pharmaceutical grade nicotine in all of our eliquids. Eliquids come in various strengths, the table below is a guide to the correct strength for you:

0mg

(0mg/ml - 0.0% nicotine)
“Cold Turkey”
For vapers that have already cut out nicotine, but desire the effect of vaping. Also good for users that are ‘stepping down’ their use, with a vision to quit altogether.

3mg

(3mg/ml - 0.3% nicotine)
“Cloud Chaser”
Click here to read more on cloud chasing. This super low strength allows the vaper to vape more frequently, without getting light headed.

6mg

(6mg/ml - 0.6% nicotine)
“Low”
For less than 20 a day smokers. 6mg is the most common strength, it offers the nicotine ‘hit’ at the same time allowing you to enjoy your flavours.

12mg

(12mg/ml - 1.2% nicotine)
“Medium”
For 20 – 30 a day smokers. A bit more strength behind it, this is the strength we recommend for most people making the switch to vaping.

18mg

(18mg/ml - 1.8% nicotine)
“High”
For 30+ a day smokers. You may think this would be the best place to start, however this is very strong. Would suit a very heavy smoker or cigar smoker.

Types of Eliquid

There are two main types of eliquids: Tank Eliquid and Cloud Chasers. The difference between the two it the ratio of Propylene Glycol to Vegetable Glycerin; referred to as the “PG/VG Ratio”.

Tank Eliquids These liquids have either a 50:50 mix of PG to VG, or are higher in PG. The ‘Eliquids’ Section in the navigation bar features eliquids that are both 50:50 (Flavour Freaks) and 60:40 (Classics, Origins etc). Tank liquids give you a full flavour and a medium strength throat hit.

Cloud Chasers These liquids are higher in VG than tank liquids. The Cloud Chaser section in the navigation bar you will find eliquids that are high in VG content, usually 20:80 or 10:90 – PG to VG ratio. These liquids produce much more vapour than their tank counter parts, hence the name Cloud Chaserss. Cloud Chaser eliquid is much thicker than tank liquid, as such will only be suitable for specific devices, such as the Kangertech Subox. These liquids are not suitable for devices such as the eGo device.

Cloud Chasing is now a fully-fledged ‘sport’ with competitions running around the world! Our Cloud Chaser Classic eliquid is perfect for beating the competition with a super high VG ratio of 10:90.

When using cloud chaser eliquid we recommend drinking lots of water, as vegetable glycerin is naturally hygroscopic, meaning it attracts water molecules. Incidentally drinking lots of water will help your skin recover from the years of smoking, so a double benefit!

Sensitivity

Rarely, some users may find that they are sensitive to propylene glycol, which may cause a rough feeling in the throat or in some very rare cases swelling of the tongue. If this happens stop use, and switch to a high VG or Cloud Chaser eliquid.

Your first vape

Now you have everything you need, time to make the switch. We recommend making the switch first thing in the morning, so you have had a good sleep and have been cigarette free for 8 hours or so. As you may find if you combine the two it may cause coughing. This also allows you time to charge your batteries.

Now juice up your tank, as per the manufacturers instructions. Fire the button and Inhale. Welcome to your new lease on life.

Over the course of the next few weeks you will find yourself coughing up all sorts of horrible stuff, this is all of the tar & mucus leaving your system. After a few days you will notice your sense of taste and smell are returning, it’s an amazing sensation. To really ramp it up try a bottle of Avalanche, but be warned, it’s a very powerful menthol blast!

We hope this guide will help you in your switch to vaping, if you have any questions or would like to get intouch, please join us on Facebook or Twitter and we will welcome you to the vaping community.

Keep it cloudy,

The Herbal Tides Team
